Why do I call total strangers sweetie? Like the city worker from streets & sans who was going door to door investigating the rat problem in the alley. I say the rats were around the other night, referring to the championship hockey game and their boisterous fans. Sweetie doesn't crack a smile. He has been in and out of the truck in the rain knocking on doors. He is also probably a fan. Maybe he was one of those people wearing a red jersey honking his car horn until 1 in the morning after the win. Sports psychologists, not the ones who study fan behavior and the relationship between mood & performance or biomechanics or whatever, but the ones who examine the fanatics write of bonding & catharsis and of depression. The atheletes win, the fans are happy, the team loses, the fans are depressed...but we're talking about real depression. From living so close to the stadium, I have experienced this — I love the quiet nights when I don't even notice the game has ended because everyone was too depressed to honk their horns.
